Elle Eats : Momofuku Nishi Restaurant Review

Momofuku Nishi

Tastes: David Chang’s new restaurant Momofuku Nishi is exactly what you want it to be – sleek, delicious, and on trend, with enough food fun to feel fresh, but tastes that are still comforting and familiar.   Nowadays, most foodies hear the word fusion and run in the other direction.  In Chang’s case, a mash up of amazing Asian flavors – including Korean and Japanese – meet Italian.  A curious mix to be sure, until you shove a forkful of caci e pepe into your face and realize that you’re actually nuts about fermented chickpea paste.  (WHAT?!?) Oh yeah, it tastes weirdly like how a saucy, cheesy pasta should taste – vegans take note!   The grilled “caesar” was also a winner.

Vibe:  Momofuku Nishi is cool and sleek.  If I have one complaint, it’s that every single chair in the joint is backless, making it hard to settle in for a real comfy evening.  That said, I’m sure the goal is to get you in, fed delicious things, and off to your 11 pm resie at the next Chelsea hotspot.  Service was reasonably attentive, though, as with most new restaurants, we were gently nudged out of our seats at about 90 minutes for the next party behind us.  Waiting is a little tricky, as there’s no real bar area, and in the winter, everyone seems intent on shoving in to the front door area, crowding out that front table.  Luckily, me and my party were seated in the back, but you might also want to request a table a little further back to facilitate a more comfortable evening.

Overall:   Nishi manages to be yet another fantastic addition to the Chang family.  The vibe while cool and wonderfully modern, doesn’t create an environment that you want to linger.  As such, I wouldn’t call this a destination restaurant, or one where I’d return to time and time again.  Momofuku Nishi can be filed under New York restaurant greats that are worth a Friday night dinner for the fun, inventive flavors, but it probably won’t make your repeats list.

Wearing: Nishi calls for sleek and neutral add ons, with a touch of trend (check those lace up heels!) to match the mood.  A little bit of an obi wrap and a tight topknot give a nod to the Asian aesthetic without being overkill. Momofuku Nishi

1)  It’s just about trench season. Juuuuuust about.  If you’re in the market, however, shop now because by the time it actually is trench season, all the good ones are snapped up.  I’m going slightly more sleek this season, sans belt, and loving this quasi-trench Ann Taylor topper.   In the under $100 category,   Gap’s rendition falls in this  price class with their regular sales.

2) Momofuku Nishi opened its doors just a bit ago and I’m headed there with friends this weekend.  Having already eaten there once, I can attest to the chicken and dumplings, clam dish, and pistachio cake being as on point as their reviews suggest.  While some folks can’t handle the thought of one more David Chang restaurant, you know you’re always in for good food, a fun scene, and solid NYC ambiance.

3) All eyes on Venezuela today, as the President puts some emergency measures in place.  Raising the prices of gas and devaluing the currency are going to be painful shifts for the population, but being billed as a necessary measure to try to keep the market on track.

4) Authenticity, seeking ways to serve others, and focusing on adding value in business situations are the key tenants of the great read, The Go-Giver.  Written in the fable style of business books, this is a quick read (or listen!) and lays out the ways in which we can focus on putting other people first in order to achieve our own success in business.

5) This week I was excited to contribute to The Everygirl discussing how to lead when you’re not the boss.  In fact, leadership is a choice that is always available to us, and is not synonymous with being in a position of authority.  Head over there to check out the discussion!

Outfit TWO:  Stripe Dress (Work Option HERE) || Sunglasses || Tote || Buxom Lip Polish || Coin Pendant

I’m so ready for spring! In today’s ordered pair, we’re styling these gorgeous sandals.  For the weekend, you’ll add a white tee to outfit one an be ready to go from day to drinks.  The punchy pink Gucci purse is obviously an investment, but is surprisingly versatile and not too girly in that deeper fuchsia hue.  Gorgeous.   Pick up that watch ASAP because it’s under $60, and you’ll be wearing it all summer.  These beauties were perfect to pair with that fun stripe dress in outfit two because the two prints together actually work as neutrals.  Depending on your office environment, you might be able to get away with the dress option for work option I also linked from Ann Taylor, which after a personal try on, I can totally vouch for as a great office staple.  I’m also blown away by the price point of that white tote – $14! It comes in a few different colors and could double as a grocery or small gym bag in a pinch!

Are you picking up some floral shoes this spring?

1) Your next Monday off started out as a way to celebrate Washington’s Birthday.  Take a minute to geek out with history channel on why we celebrate President’s Day.

2) Do you have a work frenemy? Levo League explores why this type of ambivalent relationship makes you perform better at the office.

3) February is a tough month for sales.  You want florals, but you’re freezing.  This time of year, I focus on the real deep discount stuff. Cue J. Crew Factory, with up to 60 percent off this weekend.

4) Lots of cold water getting thrown on fashion week this year! Between the hoards of bloggers that have taken over where designers and buyers once ruled, to new complaints about the fashion calendar making designs inaccessible at the right times of year, you wonder if we’re not ripe for a runway revolution.

5) Bank stocks are tumbling this week as equities continue to take an overall dive.  Blame it on the U.S. election year, blame it low oil prices…. there’s quite the menu of world troubles right now, all adding up to a rough year for financials.

Recreating Style: Black Nike Sneakers Outfit

Black Nike Outfit

Oh these sneakers! Anyone else having a major moment with black nikes?! I feel like I’ve kind of historically shrugged off the athliesure look, but it is clearly here to stay! This look works well for me because the leather leggings make it look like you’ve put some modicum of effort into your weekend outfit.  The rest of the pieces keep it casual and appropriate for rolling around the city and running errands.  An extra layer of a sweater over this white tee will take this look straight into spring and the tiny addition of a pre-stacked set of gold necklaces is another detail that turns a few basics into an actual outfit.  If you haven’t already been regularly stalking Everlane, head right on over there now for some head turning basics, including this gem of a tote that will be a piece to last you the next decade.  Are you girls into the sneakers as day wear look? Let me know how you style your sneaks!
