Sneaker + Slip On = The Joie Kidmore

Joie Kidmore Sneaker || 190 USD

Ladies my search for the perfect weekend sneaker has ended! For a while, I thought I was in the market for the ubiquitious New York City black Nike, but I just couldn’t find one that fit the bill as far as looking sleek, slipping on easily, and having a nice thin sole.  Enter the Joie Kidmore. It was easily my favorite of the myriad sneaks I’ve slipped my foot in the past few months. Also how cool is this snake skin detail? It caught my eye because it was slightly interesting, but subtle enough to still go with anything I’ll throw on over the weekend.

While the price was on the upper end of what I’d pay for a normal slip on sneaker, their all-leather construction and comfort won me over. Gals were split on sizing on the site – but I took my normal size and it worked out perfectly since the leather will stretch a little. I think where ladies experienced the rubbing mentioned was where they sized up for tightness around the bridge of the foot, then got too much length and were slipping around. (That’s a lot of detail, but there you go!) For those of you not sold on the Kidmore, I’ve included some of the others I was scouting that were top contenders.

Do you have a favorite comfy weekend sneaker? Let me know in the comments!

Anyone else super ready to throw on a maxi dress and call it summer? I’m knee deep in summer dress browsing, and updating some basics over the next couple of weeks. Let me know if there’s anything you’re on the hunt for! I’m in need of a lineup of dresses for a several-week vaca this summer so you’ll be seeing lots of shopping posts in the month of June!

1) Brexit’s merits are debatable on political principles, but the economic costs in both the short and long term are arguably not worth it for the UK.   The New Yorker does a nice job of outlining some of the issues at play.

2) In addition to dresses, I know I’ll be in need of a slew of products to keep my hair in check over this summer season. I’m always obsessed with Sephora’s sample kits, and this one with summer hair saviors is no different.

3) I can’t get enough of poufy skirts in spring. Add a tank and sandals and you’re ready for a night out.

4) Anyone else weirdly into knowing what people do in the morning to get their day going? Levo league has morning routines of 7 of their favorite mentors.

5) Work dresses are dazzling at Ann Taylor right now and many at $75. I’m picking up this Kimono Dress whose sleeves will act as built in A/C come July!

Tan Totes for Spring

Tan + Tote

As you gals have seen, black is a year round color for me.  I can’t help myself and can’t even blame it on New York. (Though, after a few hours sitting in a filthy subway car, you totally get why it’s the state color.) I’m seemingly always in need of bags that are gigantic, that I can throw my whole life in and be set for the day. Enter my effort to spring up my look and swap out my daily black commuting tote with something a little lighter.  A few of my faves are below, though the Claire V down there is probably what I’ll be splurging over. Do you have a tote that you love for spring ?

I’m spring cleaning this weekend in a big way. In NYC that means you actually have to schedule the Goodwill to come to your door and pick up the piles of clothes and shoes you were too lazy to walk there throughout the year. Insert embarrass emjoi here. Did anyone else tackle a closet clean out recently!

1) Zimbabwe is running out of cash and pressing print on the presses to keep up. (Hint: Their incredible reliance on imports will keep Thai problem around for the foreseeable future.)

2) I wanted to love this Kat Von D matte lipstick more than I do. The color is gorgeous at first but seems to dry to a muddier shade that bleeds a bit after wear. It’s also very drying which I know I’m generally in for with a matte shade, but this one feels excessively so. Bummer.

3) Cooking for mom this weekend? I loved this roundup of brunch recipes that you can use whenever. Because skillet Heuvos Racheros doesn’t have its own holiday. Yet.

4) This geometric tote from Zara is doubling as my gym bag and weekend shopper. For less than $40 I feel just fine about that.

5) It is on my bucket list to one day wear a ridiculously large pink feathery hat to the Kentucky Derby. Here’s a fabulous roundup of the events style through the years!

The Makeup Show NYC : 2016 Review

The Makeup Show NYC: 2016 Review

What an incredible year at The Makeup Show! If you’ve not yet heard of it, the Makeup Show is a professional industry event where some of the industries top brands come together to share their products, and engage in presentations on business skills, artistry techniques, and to share new products! The event is for professionals in the beauty industry and both tickets and credentials are required.  If you’re a makeup artist, stylist, or other beauty professional this is a MUST attend event.

I had the privilege this year to attend for the first time and get to see some of the great brands and new products on display. The makeup show is awesome for not only stocking your makeup kit with classics that you know you repurchase again and again, but also for getting exposed to new brands that you might not yet have heard of!

These gorgeous painted gals welcomed us all into the main entrance hall…..

and the place was buzzing with crazy crowds and plenty of lines!

 Products:

The full line up of all the brands represented can be found here! I gravitate toward a few tried and true brands–Nars, Make Up Forever, and MAC to replenish my pro kit. All three were offering fantastic discounts to credentialed professionals– 30 percent, 40-50 percent, and 20 percent off respectively.  This is incredibly helpful when you know you go through 10 pans of Brun a year for brows!! (You MAC lovers out there feel me here….)  While of course the discounts are specific to the show, I thought I’d list the top products from these brands I always look to stock up on and continue to repurchase again and again.  You know that when you’re willing to buy something a few times over, it’s a true staple in your beauty kit! 🙂

Nars:

— The Multiple (Orgasm) || 39 USD ||  This cream to powder allover color stick is my ride or die weekend b. What’s on my cheeks on a Saturday? This. And pretty much only this. It’s the perfect shade and the pinky orange hue gives a lovely glow any time of year.

— Audacious Lipsticks (ALL) || 32 USD || I truly couldn’t decide on a favorite color here.  Pick Anna, Janet, or any of the punchier hues and find yourself swathed in gorgeous creamy sheen color that lasts like crazy.  This is hands down my favorite lipstick on the market right now.

— Satin Lip Pencil (Palais Royal) || 26 USD || Palais Royal is almost all I wear on my lips in the fall. There are a number of other beautiful shades but this is one I reach for from September on!

MAC:

— Shadows (SO MANY!) || 16 USD || I’m going to run you down a list of fave colors here just for fun, but really with this selection, you can spend hours swatching and still want to walk away with them all! Some of my repurchased staples include Orb, Brun, Saddle, Plum Dressing, Beauty Marked, Shale, Kid, Twinks, Deep Damson, and Satin Taupe.  If you’re even slightly an eyeshadow junkie, do yourself the favor of going the way of the palette and buy single pans.  It’s a significantly better value at $6 a pan!

Make Up Forever:

— Ultra HD Invisible Foundation  (Color 118) || 42 USD || I love the HD foundation and this new stick formula goes on gorgeously and stays all day. Color conversion from the past product is easy; pop into a sephora if you need additional help!

— HD Pressed Powder (No Color) || 36 USD || I am not a huge fan of powders but like a little something to set my foundation before I powder contour on top of it.  Enter the HD pressed powder.  Remember earlier versions in that little pot?! What a mess! Half of it ended up in my lap instead of on my face so I’m nuts about their newer pressed version which travels well too!

Presentations:

By far my favorite keynote speaker was the amazing Scott Barnes, below.  You know him from oh, I don’t know, everyone’s face you want to look like – J. Lo, Kim Kardashian. He’s the master of the “glow” and really piloted the lit from within look. In his keynote address he took a gal from makeup less to naturally gorgeous and polished in just a few minutes.

One of the tips I loved is that he talked about how to expertly nose contour.  He said that most people blend the nose contour line out, and down the sides of the nose, which ends up looking muddy and wastes product. (Who knew!?) Instead, he suggested tip your head sideways and blend up and out toward the bridge of the nose, which also helps soften the highlight! It’s fabulous little tips like this that make it worthwhile to stick around for the great discussions throughout the event.

Overall, this was an excellent experience and I look forward to The Makeup Show NYC 2017! If I could do anything different, I would definitely go for the full two days and be sure to get in very early the first day to get shopping out of the way! That leaves plenty of time to re-enter over the next couple of days to get to any presentations you want to be sure to hit.  While I didn’t attend the networking career fair that’s held on Day 2, that also seems to be a perfect place to drop by and get to know other brands and ways to work further in the beauty industry. Have you attended the Makeup Show in New York or another city? Let me know how you enjoyed it in the comments!

Elle Eats: The NoMad Restaurant Review

The NoMad Restaurant

The gorgeous NoMad Hotel is home to the equally dazzling NoMad Restaurant.  While not new to the New York scene, it was a new-to-me place that definitely lived up to the hype and was worth a few highlights here! Overall, the service is strong (as are the cocktails-ladies pick the “gentlemen’s exchange”) and you’ll find plenty of light and interesting options. Don’t miss the milk and honey dessert. Despite the chicken’s fame it was the best bite I had all night – sweet and salty with just enough creaminess to feel satisfying but not too heavy.

FOOD:  The chicken, obviously the chicken.  They bring you out one heckuva bird that has angel tears and truffles stuffed under the skin. It’s shown to you in somewhat the way I imagine Christmas gooses used to be displayed-feet and all- then brought back to the kitchen and prepped up for you where the Chef does all the heavy lifting of making you a beautiful pile of delicious bird.  Somewhat less obviously, you will also deeply love the tortolloni when it’s on menu, as well as the seared foie gras which is the perfect combination of lightly crisp from the caramelization and smooth and creamy alongside the crunchy veg that accompanies it.

Truffle-The-Nomad-Restaurant The-Nomad-Restaurant-Review-Foi_grasImages: herehere

FINANCE:  You’re a few bills deep here.  The classic chicken dish sets you back at 89 USD for two, and other mains run around 30.  Cocktails are “New York” reasonable, but you could also very realistically start your evening with more affordable cocktails just outside the neighborhood and do a simple glass of wine with your dinner here.

FASHION: The classic yet scene-y feel of NoMad calls for something that can straddle both worlds.  This floral Tibi dress is the perfect outfit base.  The longer length gives it some fantastic coverage for early spring, and topped with a fitted leather jacket, it’s just enough tough with your sweet.  Lace up sandals are the shoe of the season, and again, have a bit more to them with the addition of all of those straps and a higher back, ensuring they don’t feel too summery.  The necklace is the less-than-20-dollars modern stunner from Nordstrom that I’ve been wearing with everything and the pops of pink in the lips and bag polish off this look with a little color.
